Linux is a modern operating system with a friendly graphic working environment similar to commercial operating systems. You may choose the graphic environment you like and use it, modify its look, behavior, etc. - for all of this, just follow your preferences (nobody will make you do anything you don't like); the same is to be applied about the programs as well.

When you have installed the basic Linux system, you have usually provided satisfactory protection against hackers or viruses; there is no need to buy any other license for anti-virus or firewalls, keep them configured and updated, while being diverted from your own, more important work. The individual distributions differ according to the purpose (the server, the workstation, etc.); what's more, there are different distributions for advanced users and for beginners.
